To help get started, I drive straight to Powell, Wyoming, stay there for a few days, and the head to Nephi, Utah on June 27th, by way of Salt Lake City to pick up my field assistant. That is ~1600 miles.

Um, I think your calculations are wrong since the only thing West of Santa Cruz is Davenport. So I'll go with 21.5 miles. Heh heh.

"The West" will always be the west for me, even when it is east. I guess you can take the girl out of the midwest, but you can't take the midwest out of the girl.
